ED Treatment Methods
Based on the previous article, the treatment you choose for an erectile dysfunction problem should be specific to its underlying cause.
Here are some of the ways to address ED problems taking the possible ED causes into account. Do not feel obliged to adopt them, but take a balanced view and choose only the ones most appropriate for your situation. Always get advice from a health-care specialist before starting any treatment.
Reduce other drugs dosages
Since the launch of Viagra on to the market, relentless advertising has sold the message you need nothing more than the little blue pill to treat every possible cause of erectile dysfunction. This is a dishonest and dangerous view, promoting the sale of the drug when other forms of treatment may be more effective. Take the possibility the erectile dysfunction is a side effect of another drug. In such cases, the proper approach is to reduce the dosage of the drug causing the problem or to switch to another drug without the side effect. Just taking Viagra is unlikely to help and, in some cases, can actually cause further problems.
Treatment for patients who have had injuries
We need to consider the possible causes of the erectile dysfunction. If there is a physical injury, it will be for the doctors to assess the extent of the damage and decide whether treatment of the injury will restore sexual function. Some diseases like diabetes can also cause damage to the nerve endings and produce permanent erectile dysfunction if not treated early enough. Some surgical operations, e.g. for prostate cancer, can also damage sexual performance. In all these cases, it is possible Viagra will be able to help, but you will have to wait for the doctors and surgeons to treat the underlying cause before sexual performance can be restored, if at all.
Why the most choose Viagra pills to other ED treatment methods?
The reason for Viagra’s popularity is the convenience. All you need do is swallow the pill and wait for results. Yet there are injections, suppositories and topical creams that are equally effective. The problems, however, are obvious. It requires a little skill to make the injection and there is some pain. There’s also an embarrassment factor. Using Viagra hides the problem from a partner. Using an injection, suppository, cream or one of the devices admits the problem and requires acceptance from the partner. That said, the injections, suppositories and cream produce an involuntary erection and, to some extent, this overcomes situations where the cause is purely psychological.
Using vacuum devices and implants
However, many other methods are also very fast-acting, producing an erection in no more than ten minutes. The most common of the devices is a vacuum pump. This is clumsy to use and does not produce a completely hard erection, but it is very reliable and enables intercourse in most cases.
Finally, if all else has failed, there are surgical procedures to insert a prosthesis. This is most often used where a physical injury is too severe for any of the noninvasive treatments to succeed or where the use of Viagra will cause too many problems with other life-sustaining drugs. There are two basic types. One is semi-rigid and merely needs to be bent into the right position for sexual activity. The other is inflatable, using a pump to inflate or deflate on demand. These devices usually last for about ten years before needing replacement.
