Larry’s experience.

Learn how Larry, his partner and the doc adressed the problem

Catching up with Larry in Boston, he was completely laid back, acting like nothing would faze him now. He started off by admitting he’d been having problems with his erections for more than a year before he finally agreed to see a doctor. His smile was sad. “All that wasted time,” he said. “There were all kinds of crazy ideas running round in my head. One minute I was sure there was something seriously wrong with me. The next, I was sure the problem was just going to go away.”

We were talking in a bar, his long-term partner looking amused as she watched the interview. “I kept telling him sitting down with a doctor would clear the air, tell him what was really wrong with him, give him some confidence.”

Larry broke in, “But I didn’t listen and everything just went from bad to worse. I just couldn’t get any kind of hardness. I made up excuses. It was high blood pressure, or all I had to do was lose some weight.”

But, cutting a long story short, he finally made an appointment and went to see his doctor. “I just asked for a physical check-up but, when he started doing the exam, I mentioned Viagra.”

Taking the hint, the doctor switched tack and started asking Larry questions about his lifestyle, how much he drank, did he smoke, and so on. He reassured Larry that millions of men had the same problem. Viagra seemed to work with most men.

Larry was laughing. “Looking back, it was just straightforward. He checked me out. There was nothing else obviously wrong so he wrote out a prescription for Viagra. The first time we tried it, everything worked out fine.” He laughed with his partner. “She kicked my butt for not going sooner.”

“He’s as stubborn as a mule. Left to me, he would have been into the doctor at the end of the first month. Still, everything’s great now.”

They seem to have worked things out between them but no-one should put off seeing their doctor for a year. When Viagra’s such a quick and easy treatment, there’s no point in delaying. Just have the check-up and get the cure. It’s that easy. back to top

Jed’s experience

Everything was great in our relationship until about four years ago. And then it all started to go wrong. I just couldn’t keep my erections going. It was just too embarrassing. I started avoiding May, my wife, staying up late into the night to watch TV, not going to bed until I was sure she was asleep. Finally, I asked my doctor for a check-up. The blood tests came back with mixed news. I had a thyroid problem which was probably causing the sex problems. This meant I was taking drugs for the rest of my life. But, after a month or so, not only did I start feeling better in myself but my sex drive came back as well. Now, I switch the TV off early and go to bed with May again. back to top

David’s experience

It came on me slowly. My erections were just not as hard or they collapsed too soon. When my doctor said it was safe for me to take Viagra, I got started on them immediately. Now, I’m back to the hardness I like. Sex is really satisfying again. That’s one thing less to worry about. Life is too stressful these days what with the economy tanking and my job on the line. At least I can go home after work and know everything’s back to normal in the bedroom. back to top

William’s experience

I googled Viagra and read up on it before I went in to see my doctor. I couldn’t help myself. I got hooked on all the bits about side effects and safety. So when I saw my doctor, that was the first question out of my mouth. He was very good and explained the risks were small. Almost all men can take it without any problems. Turns out he was right. back to top

A professional 's comment

Viagra is now the standard treatment for erectile dysfunction. Here’s what every man should know before he takes it. If you’ve been living a quiet life, you should have a physical exam just to make sure your heart is strong enough for starting off sex again. There can also be problems of side effects if you’re taking other drugs for heart disease or high blood pressure. Talk through all the drug interactions to avoid. As to side effects, there are only a few and most are not serious. The more common are a headache and stomach upset. You only need to worry if you suddenly lose your eyesight or hearing, or have extreme shortness of breath, chest pain and other symptoms suggesting a heart attack. You should also remember you can have too much of a good thing. If your erection becomes painful and will not go away, go to hospital immediately. Other than that, all I need do is remind you Viagra is not magic. You can still catch a sexually transmitted disease or find yourself a father in nine months time. To avoid problems, use a condom.
